South Dakota Part 3
Western Nebraska and South Dakota Day 3
Day 1No stop in a tourist trap is complete without doing something completely touristy. There's nothing more touristy than having your picture taken in old-timey clothes. Kate and Morgan dressed up as saloon girls. Ian didn’t want anything more than to sit with a jug and a blunderbuss gun. Tim wore a duster and looked like a cowpoke who had been on the trail for a month, enjoying a cold beer.
With one of our secondary quests out of the way, we needed food.
We have a rule when it comes to eating on the road: do not eat anything that’s also in Lincoln. That means we skipped Subway and Boss’s Pizza and Chicken. We found a little place upstairs from the Keystone Boardwalk called Cruizzer’s Pizza. The crust is perfect, the toppings are generous and I’m scared to ask where they get their crac—- I mean cheese.
We liked it so much we forgot to take a picture of the pizza. So here's some empty pans!
The Black Hills is a popular tourist destination because of Mount Rushmore. When you're in The Black Hills, you should visit Rushmore.
When you get to Mount Rushmore, you're greeted by the Avenue of Flags. The Avenue consists of 56 flags flanking the walkway between the entrance and the Monument. The flags represent the 50 states, three territories, one district, and two commonwealths of the United States.
We found The Nebraska Flag!
We also sat down for a presentation at the Gutzon Borglum Visitor Center. We learned how the sculpture crew turned their model into a monument.
We left the visitor center to hike the Presidential Trail. The trail gets up close and personal to the monument. You'll see rocks and debris that the workers dynamited off the mountain face. At the end of the trail is a rock formation. This formation provides a great vantage point for viewing and framing the monument. You can even look into George Washington’s nose!
We wanted a sit-down dinner for the night, so we went to the Powder House. The Powder House is more upscale than road food. This was a welcome respite after a long day in Keystone and at the Mount Rushmore National Monument. The food was so good we skipped taking pictures and just dug right in!
We went back to our Airbnb, watched another installation of the Dog Show, and crashed out for the evening.
