We Drove Through Nebraska and You Won't Believe What We Found!

Image
At the beginning of June 2021, we embarked on a journey to Black Hills National Forest. We went to pay our last respects to my Uncle Al. We had an informal ceremony that included spreading his ashes on what a few locals have dubbed "Al's Hill". This hill is near US-16A, north of Custer State Park. We woke up, packed the car, decided to leave our camping chairs behind, hit Starbucks, and got on the road. Have coffee. Will Travel! We had options for our trip. We could take up I-29 to I-90 for four lanes and 75mph speed limits all the way to Mt Rushmore. Instead, we headed west on I-80 for four lanes and 75mph speed limits until we got to North Platte. The drive from Lincoln Nebraska to North Platte is boring. The land is flat and featureless since the Interstate follows the Platte River. You never see any real features in the eastern half of the state because you follow the Platte River Valley. There's a tractor and some cows. You need to keep your mind occupied or you...

Kansas City Softball Tournament Early June 2021

Catching some shade in the outfield! We were in Kansas City to support my daughter Morgan at a softball tournament in early June. We took Kate’s Edge SUV because stuffing us into my Focus Hatchback would be comical. My Focus’s hatch can hardly contain Morgan’s softball bag. I could not imagine trying to fit four people’s weekend luggage and all the ballpark stuff into it. Side note: I have taken my Focus camping in the past. It’s like a clown car. Camping... in a Focus Road Trip! Kate is a planner who loves Pinterest. In fact, go check out her Pinterest right now . We should have a travel Pinterest board up soon. She found a road trip idea for the kids on Pinterest. It worked great at keeping Morgan and Ian occupied: Get some bags, put snacks and activities in the bags. Label them with “open at 830” or a half-hour after leaving. We only did one bag for each leg of the trip, since we were only in the car for about 3 and a half hours in each direction. ALMOST TIME!!! The first day’s bag ...

Eastern Nebraska Glamping at Kimberly Creek Retreat

Image
Standing in front of the Queen Dome Glamping is like camping in luxury. It’s a step up from a “regular” cabin. You are away from the real world, but you’re not leaving all the comforts of home. Glamping at Kimberly Creek Retreat is luxurious compared to regular camping. Your sleeping arrangements include a comfortable bed with clean sheets. The bathroom includes a toilet, shower, and sink. In the kitchenette, you will find a small fridge, a sink, a convection oven, and all the kitchen utensils you would need. Outside, you get a fire ring and a propane grill for cooking. “Do these cabins have air conditioning?” Air conditioning is the most important need for Kate when she travels. A convenient bathroom is also up there. Camping is no exception. She had been tent camping once before, in high school with friends. She had a miserable experience because it was hot, humid, and she had to drive to a bathroom. Kate can look back and cherish the memories she made with her friends. She laughs a...
